Michele DeMaree is the owner of DeMaree Consulting, Inc., a privacy consulting firm. Prior to forming her consulting firm, she was the Director of Enterprise Privacy for Best Buy. In this position, she was responsible for providing strategic direction to Best Buy relating to their customer information practices. She developed an education and awareness program and also spearheaded the development of privacy strategies for several Best Buy brands, including Best Buy.com, Magnolia, and Musicland. She also created and maintained the companyís reputation as best in class related to data privacy issues.
During her seven and a half years at Best Buy, she also managed the consumer litigation and advertising compliance teams for both Best Buy and BestBuy.com. She was a member of the Direct Marketing Associationís Ethics Policy Committee, the Center for Information Policy Leadership, Experianís Consumer Advisory Council, the Promotion Marketing Associationís Customer Relationship Management Council, and co-founded the Twin Cities Privacy Network. Prior to joining Best Buy, Ms. DeMaree was a legal editor while finishing her law degree at William Mitchell College of Law.
Ms. DeMaree was in the inaugural class of privacy professionals taking the privacy certification exam in October 2004. She is now a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP). She recently initiated and taught the first Information Privacy Law course in Minnesota as an adjunct law professor at Hamline University School of Law. She is a frequent speaker at national conferences and seminars about the importance of developing best practices around customer privacy. She recently became a council member for the Ponemon Institute's Responsible Information Management Council and a faculty member at Data University.
